Healing Emotional Triggers
The journey of healing from any traumatic event is one that is not easy. We need the healing touch from our Lord Jesus Christ and the support from those he has equipped.
God certainly desires for you God certainly desires for you to be healed from your abuse, and He will heal and restore you completely. There is a process for this healing, and when taken, you will experience a profound victory that can only be had by those who have overcome the deepest of wounds.
Like the lotus flower beginning in the deep trenches of the dark, yet with great perseverance and faith it emerges into the light and blooms into the most beautiful flower for all to see!
The importance of healing is certainly for our sake, so we can experience great peace and joy, but it is also for the sake of others. Hurt people hurt others, and even though you may not mean to, when you are wounded and hurting you are likely to also wound and hurt others.
“We must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into.”
Hebrews 12:1 (TPT)
Therefore, this is the reason God is calling you to be healed and restored so he can take you to another level of glory, allowing you to be used as the healer, as “healed people heal others.”
You Matter!
Often, abuse and trauma cause us to tell ourselves that we don’t matter, that our stories don’t matter, and that we are not worthy to take action to better our situation. In fact, one of the reasons that people fall into depression is that they feel out of control of their life. Feeling responsible for what happened to us can cause us to get stuck in the past, thinking we deserve to suffer.
While you don’t want to belittle what happened to you, it does not benefit you to stay stuck. Understanding the impact abuse had on your thoughts and feelings can help you to understand how you can embrace the changes that will make your life better. As you discover the effects of abuse and begin to address them, you can put yourself on the path to having a godly mind filled with joy. You do not want to be the cause of your own problems! Through God, you can have great control over your life—and you are going to use that control to create the life you desire! With God, you cannot help but discover the real you and live the abundant life he intended for you to enjoy.
Your True Identity
The first step to any healing is to know and understand your identity in Christ. When you know with great assurance that you are loved, valued, and cherished, you will overflow with great joy and be able to love and comfort others with the same comfort you have been given.
“All praises belong to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he is the Father of tender mercy and the God of endless comfort. 4 He always comes alongside us to comfort us in every suffering so that we can come alongside those who are in any painful trial. We can bring them this same comfort that God has poured out upon us.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (TPT)
Understanding your value and worth is going to position you in a place of victory, so that you no longer sabotage your life. You will then be able to make godly decisions bringing further joy into your life.
Changing Your Mindset
“Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.”
Romans 12:2 (TPT)
As you discover the impact of your abuse, not the details of abuse, but the impact or lies that developed because of it, you will then take those thoughts captive and reprogram them with truths from God.
When you know the truth, it truly does set you free. Knowledge is powerful in every area of life, including your own thinking and behaviors, and what triggers them. Most of us are unaware of our triggers, so when we go into panic mode, we can feel confused and hopeless because we don’t quite understand what is happening. Awareness of what you are experiencing in your thoughts, emotions and even your body will become your friend—because the more you know about what is driving your thinking and the outcome of those thoughts, the easier it is to recognize the connection and put a stop to it. You will then take control and make the necessary good choices that will give you your desired outcome!
Godly Anchoring
We all have a God-given ability to visualize and prepare ourselves for success. Anchoring is a technique that empowers us to do so. In anchoring, we learn to connect something we experience with our five senses to a positive feeling we desire to have. It is therefore a powerful tool we can use to help ourselves get back to a state of confidence, peace, and power. It is also an effective tool that moves us out of the thoughts and behavior patterns we wish to change, so we can move toward the goals we have.
Remember, feelings are powerful. They were given to us by God for a purpose. Feelings can tell us when we are in situations that need to change, and they can persuade us to take action. We just need to be master over those feelings and decide how we want and need to feel. We want our feelings to work for us. Anchoring helps us achieve this.
The concept of anchoring is to think of a positive, biblical thought, based on our true identity in Christ—such as “I am blessed, protected, capable and successful.” These “I AM” statements are based on who God says we are, and because they come from God, they are powerful for changing us into his image and producing joy and peace inside us! Remember, God is the Great I AM, and he goes before us. When we use the words, I AM, make sure to anchor and identify yourself to him and to use only the words that confirm who God says you are!
When stating your I AM statements, use your five senses to anchor your true identity with a fragrant essential oil of your choice. There are so many essential oils to choose from. The sense of smell will anchor into your mind the positive words from God, creating a beautiful and positive narration for yourself. Every time you smell that scent in the future, you will be reminded of who you are in Christ, rooting you further into His likeness.
